Hot Cocktails to ease you into Autumn

Food and drink are some of the greatest pleasures of the colder months. Now the weather’s turning a crisp lager or icy G&T isn’t quite so appealing, so try these recipes for a little something to warm you through on a chilly evening.

Hot Toddy

Dissolve a teaspoon of honey and 25ml whisky in a mug of water just off the boil. Add two cloves, a cinnamon stick and lemon juice to taste. This is a soothing and delicious way to stave off the first hint of man flu.

Spiked hot chocolate

Add a shot of the good stuff to your favourite hot chocolate recipe. Rum, brandy or whisky are excellent choices, but Amaretto is our favourite. For extra kick and richness add a shot of crème to cacao as well.

Hot buttered rum

For just one drink place a small slice of soft butter in a mug and add 1tsp brown sugar and pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. Mix well then add two shots of dark rum, top up with hot water and stir until combined. A drop of vanilla extract or a little orange zest is nice too.

Mulled cider

If mulled wine is just too Christmassy, mulled cider is Autumn in a glass. If you don’t want to make a whole batch just heat a mug of dry cider with a little brown sugar (or maple syrup), cinnamon, cloves, allspice and orange zest. Simmer until your patience runs out.
